Driving directions from Lihue Airport: Take Ahukini Rd. west. Turn right at Kapule Hwy. (Hwy. 51). Hwy. 51 merges with Kuhio Hwy. (Hwy. 56). Pono Kai is about 20 minutes (7 miles) down, on the right side of the road.

Restaurants abound along the 8-mile East Kauai strip called the Royal Coconut Coast. A five-minute drive south, for instance, is a one-story, open-air, shopping-and-dining village called Coconut Marketplace that contains a dozen or more restaurants and food stands.

What to expect: Finesse distinguishes Pono Kai, right down to the rope-wrapped poles holding up tiki torches. Large wooden chairs permanently installed by the beach allow guests to sunset- and whale-watch or just dreamily contemplate the vast, blue ocean. The hot tub next to the 22-by-40-foot pool is a roomy 10 square feet. Picnic tables in the poolside gas-grill barbecue area include three that are wheelchair-accessible. Charcoal grills are available along the beachfront. Lush gardens screen the pool, but beachfront lawns feature only coconut trees so the open space remains compatible with the broad ocean vista.

Amenity highlights: Nearly deserted, the mile-long beach beckons guests whether rough water discourages swimming and snorkeling or calm water invites them. A biking/jogging path runs parallel to the beach. Lounge chairs are available on the beach, on sunning lawns, or around the pool. In addition to volleyball, an 18-hole putting course, two tennis courts, two shuffleboard courts, and the croquet lawn, there's also a lawn for bocce.

Pono Kai is comprised of 13 acres and 246 units in 10 three-story buildings constructed in the plantation style popular on Kauai. Unlike most Kauai condominium resorts, it includes various hotel amenities, such as the many recreation facilities. The lobby includes two activity desks for arranging golf times, luaus, helicopter sightseeing trips to the spectacular Napali Coast, and all other activities available throughout the island. A competing activity desk offering discount bargains is tucked away in a lobby shop where videos, snorkel sets, and boogie boards can be rented. A spacious shelter next to the pool contains soft drink and snack machines, bathrooms, and lots of tables and chairs for group dining in fresh air stirred by ceiling fans.

Pono Kai contains two lighted tennis courts, a lighted croquet lawn, two lighted shuffleboard courts, an 18-hole putting golf course, a volleyball court, and a bocce lawn. Waikaea Canal abuts the south end of the resort, providing freshwater fishing. Wailua Golf Course is a 10-minute drive south. The Wailua River, 13 minutes south, is the longest navigable river in Hawaii, and boat and kayak trips up the river are popular.
