The Sand Bar - Next to the pool, this open-air spot serves light meals and tropical drinks. Jolly Roger - Operated separately but located right by the hotel's entrance, this long-time restaurant is a local gathering spot. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, featuring comfort foods with a Hawaiian twist. Across the street, the Coconut Marketplace, a one-story open-air shopping-and-dining village, contains many restaurants and food stands.

What to expect: A charming open-air lobby with whirring ceiling fans and a veranda looking toward a spacious lawn, the pool complex, and the ocean portray the plantation-style tone maintained by the hotel. Pineapple-shaped slats on balconies enhance the rustic look. Lush gardens between buildings and the expansive oceanfront lawn create an only-in-Hawaii scene. Amenity highlights: Parallel to the ocean is the open lawn, on which lounge chairs can be set for sunning. The pool, sundeck, and large hot tub are ringed by pretty hedges low enough so they don't interfere with the panoramic ocean view. Insider tip: East Kauai's Royal Coconut Coast is an 8-mile strip of sandy beaches, unsurpassed ocean views, and low-key activity. The Wailua River, fed by rainfall on Mt. Waialeale, the wettest spot on earth, provided abundant water for ancient Hawaiians to cultivate crops in this area. As a result, the coast abounds in archaeological sites worth visiting.

Access to top (second) floors is by staircase, not elevators. In the lobby, an activity desk arranges luaus, excursions up the nearby Wailua River, helicopter sightseeing trips to North Kauai's spectacular Napali Coast, and all other activities available throughout the island.
